At the beginning of October Steffan Fusco ventured on down to the Eagle Martial Arts open competition. Due to a busy calendar for East Coast Tae Kwon Do club, he made the long, 10 minute journey from his home alone. The event was held early on the Sunday morning in St. Killians Hall. The registration ran smoothly and the juniors were on the mats within no time displaying their knowledge and skill in the patterns and various sparring divisions.
Steffan was well prepared but still had a few pre competition jitters. Before he knew it though the time was up and he had to get the blood pumping as the seniors were being called. After seeing a few very impressive displays, especially by some very skilled fellow Tae Kwon Do practitioners, it was the turn for the advanced senior section. Now the weight catagories left something to be desired as there was an over 75kg and under 75kg category and to say Steffan made it into the under 75kg category will come as no shock to most of us. He had two fights the first of which, after a few well executed jumping kicks, spins and flurries of hand combinations he won with a unanimous decision. The second fight he found a bit more taxing and had to dig his heels in on more than one occasion as the rings were that bit smaller than he would be used to. In the final Steffan had two, two minute rounds where he did battle with his opponent but in the end he lost on a judge’s decision.
All in all it was a very successful day and Steffan told us he took many bits ofexperience from the day as they are all different and assured us he will be returning next year to return his second place trophy for the first place!!
