On Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd December  2012 East Coast  Tae Kwon  Do participated in the 40th Anniversary R.I.T.A. Tae Kwon Do Open Championships in Blanchardstown, Dublin where once again they performed to an exceptional standard taking home 2 medals out of 4 students on the Saturday (juniors) and again on the Sunday (seniors) winning 3 medals from 3 participants.

On the Saturday the youngest of the East Coast competitors Chloe, performed a very strong pattern but alas did not qualify through to the final.  In sparring Chloe was the competitor to beat however the scores did not go her way.

Next up were the junior boys with all three lads performing well in patterns but again the decisions went against East Coast.

The sparring rounds proved fruitful for both Alex and Killian taking home 3rd and 1st respectively – a great achievement for the lads as both were pitched against strong, determined competitors!  Kyle had the toughest group to compete against however his resilience and experience achieved a draw in the first round and a very close call in the second, with Kyle just missing out on a place.

On the Sunday our first student to enter the area was Jess Bass who performed Hwa Rang tul, in what looked like a winning tul; surprisingly it wasn’t to be. Jess was in action a while later in her sparring division, facing a Scottish lady, where once again Jess  displayed great determination against a much bigger opponent. This fight was close, in the end the decision went to her Scottish opponent.

Stefan Fusco was flying the flag for us in the senior men’s sparring division. This was quite tough because this black belt division was split into 2 weights, over 75 and under 75!
With Stefan weighing in at 63 he was giving away a lot of weight to other heavier fighters;
again he fought a wonderful fight but was just touched off in the end by a very leggy Scottish opponent.

I was the last of the East Coast competitors in and  I managed to get to the final of the veterans sparring defeating a somewhat heavier fighter in round 1, a (normal) sized fighter from Northern Ireland in the second!  I was unfortunate to get disqualified in the second round of the final!

Stefan qualified for the black belt destruction smashing two solid white breaking boards with a side kick to leave him head to head with another R.I.T.A.  black belt where he competed against a very accomplished and experienced practioner.
I also managed to qualify in the veterans section breaking 2 boards with front punch; again going head to head with a member of the I.N.T.A.  who failed on many of his attempts which made my job a lot easier; I broke with my next technique which was side kick.
Surprisingly as I was presented with my medal for the destruction techniques, it was announced that I had won the overall best veteran competitor!

All in all well done to all our East Coast students who participated in this event, again they all are a credit to all both in their effort and attitude.
Thanks to all the R.I.T.A.  members and Masters who made it a great weekend.

Saturday Competitors Alex Connolly, Kyle Mendez, Killian Hannon, Chloe Farrell
Sunday Competitors Chris McCabe, Stefan Fusco, Jess Bass

Bring on 2013!!!
Thanks.Chris McCabe December 2012
